This is a one of a kind work and will not be remade.

Why I made this piece-

I remember in drivers ed one of the first things we learned was to walk with your keys between your fingers
Wait, I should say that was told to the class but meant for the girls.

We learn early on to check the child lock before getting into an Uber or Lyft.
To text or call friends when we’re leaving somewhere alone and send an update when we get home.
To not walk alone at night unless necessary.
To change up routes when walking or running to be less predictable.
To not interact with street harassment but also don’t make them angry.
To ignore and pretend everything is fine.
We’re told to think of the worst outcomes and adjust plans accordingly.
Because if we don’t it will be our fault.

When we speak up we’re told we misunderstood.
We’re told that we should be flattered. We’re told to dress differently.
We’re told we’re over exaggerating.

We learn that we are worthless. We see how people who come forward are treated and how the perpetrators are let off easy because their lives matter. We see them becoming Supreme Court judges, police officers, and president of the United States.

Maybe instead of teaching girls how to stay safe we should focus on teaching boys and men how to be respectful and keep their hands to themselves. We don’t need men to fix this problem, we need them to stop making it in the first place.
